Yes, and that is a common mistake for just about everyone.
Assumptions and first impressions are some of the worst mistakes made commonly by people all over, and I am of no exception.

It's wrong to group Michael in due to Marcus.
It would be no different than saying bad things about Thomas because Julius flunked out of Notre Dame or was considered lazy, unmotivated when he started.
To answer you Chubz, up till fairly recently, people could carry water on planes. Most of the time, if I'm guessing, your athletes aren't subject to quite the scrutiny that the regular public has in airports, so its very possible the idea of getting rid of water bottle had never reared its head.
That all being said, obviously he didn't resist too much, since airport security is fairly quick on those who cause any commotion or object to much. He still flew.
As for the hidden compartment, the story is that those bottles are like $10 in the Miami area, its not like it was specially made for him.
The problem is, its Mike Vick, everybody wants to be quick to stone him (or for that matter any athlete that people have either a strong like or dislike for). Don't always have to wait for it to be valid or truthful.

would it make national news on CNN if Matt Schaub did the same thing? no...it wouldn't

I would venture to say it would. Take the Eugene Robinson incident before the 98 Super Bowl. That had all the headlines going into the game, and Robinson was exactly a household name. He was well known inside the NFL because of his public service, but not nationally known as much as well as Schaub really is.
ya know, this is why I hate VT, just a short few years ago they were the door mat of college football, the kinda team you schedule for a homecomming game if you are a Miami, or even a Tennessee for that matter...now everywhere I turn it is some fan, deffending them and telling me how great they are...If I am not mistaken, they were leading college football early this year in personal fouls, I don't know if they ended the season still on top in that great stat collum or not...It really bothered me in the Duke game when there was 3 maybe 4 late hit personal fouls on the quarter back in the first half, until the last one sent him to the locker room, not to return, and as he lay there on the ground from this cheap shot, the VT linebackers celibrated by running up to one another and doing chest bumps....It was DUKE FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!!!!and Beamer benched no-one, not even for one play.... one word for that THUGS.... and they only got like that after the Vick clan came...
but wouldn't that catch the news b/c it's the superbowl and not necessarily because of the player?
Personaly, I think Michael Vick and his thug brother are both terrible QB's, I think they are terrible role models for young atheletes and young people in General, I think they are both, punk @$$ thugs, they are bad for football, bad for TV, bad for young people. Marcus should have never been in the league, and Michael needs to be banned. If were a team owner, coach, or even a player, I would not want either of them on my practice squad, much less on the team.
Ok I can understand the Marcus comments
but why Mike?
His worst offense is throwing a bird and evidentally being a pro athlete who had unprotected sex.
I'm not saying he's a great QB, he's an athlete, but come off of it. He's a thug...look around...good lord.

...but the kid is just lost and made bad choices...

You really don't belive that? If he had one instance of screwing up maybe I could see it. But this is the way Marcus is. Prisons and jails are full of people who are "just lost and made a bad choice"...over and over and over.
On the other hand, the latest story with Mike is fishy. First off why would you have a water bottle with a compartment in it? And just exactly what kind of residue or substance was in it? I'm sure it was a supplement or maybe just parsley or oregano.
